Social Enterprise Sector Snapshot Around The Baltic Sea

The study is available here: Social entrepreneurship final report

One of the project “Social entrepreneurship development in the Baltic Sea Region” task was to explore availability of the education about social entrepreneurship and to assess other forms of support for the Baltic Sea region. The study considers the following seven countries: Finland, Estonia, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden.

The study includes a number of sub-categories focusing on three main issues: overall social entrepreneurship support, support of education about social entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship impact.

The study contains specific information about the social enterprise ecosystem stakeholders in each country. In previously prepared studies that discuss the EU Member States’ main stakeholder roles and relationships this information is sparse.

Despite the fact that prepared information is subjective the brief profile that is included in the report on social entrepreneurship is a very important help for those who face difficulties when trying to identify responsible institutions for collaboration proposals in the seven countries considered in this report.

The study is available in English, parts of the study that consider respective countries are in their national languages at partners webpages.

Guidelines to stimulate social economy

Local authorities have an important role in promoting social entrepreneurship in every country. However, they do not always have sufficient knowledge and not always actively participate in promotion and support of social entrepreneurship. Often the reason is the lack of a legal framework at national level or insufficient information, examples – those may favourably influence the development of social entrepreneurship. As a general objective of the project is the promotion of social entrepreneurship in the Baltic Sea region. It is important to involve local authorities to inform them about the necessity of supporting activities. To promote greater interest and support from the local government side, can be achieved by one of the results of the project – recommendation for municipalities. Those analyse situation of social entrepreneurship in each country, as well as based on the analysis of surveys and focus group work, offer solutions for more effective ways to support social entrepreneurship in the region.

When we speak about education, impact assessment is one of these areas. For that reason the educational material as a part of project has been created.

This educational material is targeted at stakeholders who need to practically develop their skills related to social impact analysis. Professors designing and students participating in
relevant courses (e.g. social entrepreneurship) will hopefully benefit as much as grass-root level changemakers who are aiming at establishing or refining their approach to societal change.
