The world’s first social enterprise speakers agency

The world’s first social enterprise speakers agency

The English charity Expert Impact, which in recent years has matched more than 400 social entrepreneurs with mentors, has just launched the world’s first social enterprise speakers agency named Expert Impact Speakers. They aim to capture a piece of the growing market for speakers and has launched the company with a diverse mix of social entrepreneurs, entertainers and thought leaders embracing topics within social and environmental change and impact.

Among the speakers, one can e.g. find:
Chris Moon, who in 1995 blew up parts of his right arm and leg in connection with a landmine explosion. He has since become a well-known lecturer on the topics of change management, motivation, leadership and the concept of limitation and is known for his great charitable work for the benefit of i.a. victims of landmines.

June O’Sullivan, an Irish social entrepreneur and author best known for her work in teaching young children. Since 2004, she has been the director of England’s largest social enterprise  childcare organisation London Early Years Foundation.

Mark Andrew Watson is a British comedian and novelist. He has appeared in a number of films and TV series and has also hosted a  series of broadcasts on BBC on how to understand life and the world around us.

According to Expert Impact’s CEO Karen Lynch, it is clear that there is a large market for engaging and inspiring speakers. At the same time, when customers are booking speakers at Expert Impact Speakers, they will contribute to creating a positive social and environmental impact. In this way, larger companies will be able to show their employees and stakeholders that they prioritize impact. It is absolutely crucial if companies are to attract the new generations of employees and talents that they can show that they are looking to do more than just make money. Expert Impact also believes that this means that corporates and their employees have a growing interest in hearing how businesses with social and environmental goals work, and Expert Impact Speakers has a wide range of social entrepreneurs among its speakers who can share that knowledge with them.

Expert Impact Speakers offers speakers for all kinds of events, including conferences, awards ceremonies and team building days. At the same time, the company differs from other speakers agencies,  by being a social enterprise, and by specializing in speakers who are diverse, ethical and passionate about changing the world for the better. Common to the speakers is also that they want their speakers fee to contribute to a better world.

Expert Impact Speakers launches with around 70 speakers and expands the the selection of speakers on an ongoing basis.Capture2

All profits from Expert Impact Speakers will be used to support leaders of social enterprises and charities through Expert Impact Mentoring. It is a program that, as previously mentioned, matches social entrepreneurs with successful business people, who then act as mentors for the entrepreneurs over a longer period of time.

Expert Impact’s latest impact report showed that for the social entrepreneurs who had been through the mentoring programe, their turnover had increased and jobs were created in the six months after mentoring sessions. 97% of participants said they would recommend the mentoring programe to others.

Do you know the OECD tool “SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP SELF-ASSESMENT?

The ‘Better Entrepreneurship Policy Tool’ was developed by the OECD (Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities – CFE) and the European Commission (DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion). The project benefitted from constructive comments from two advisory boards and various stakeholder consultations.

What is it?

The Better Entrepreneurship Policy Tool is a free online self-assessment and learning tool for inclusive and social entrepreneurship policies and programmes. The tool includes:

  • Self-assessment questionnaires that provide a framework for reflecting on the inclusive and social  entrepreneurship policies and programmes in a city, region or country
  • Policy guidance notes and inspiring case studies to support better policy design.

It is an initiative of the Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion of the European Commission, and the OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities
This tool builds on the knowledge generated jointly by OECD and the European Commission on inclusive and social entrepreneurship policy. Since 2011, this collaboration has produced a series of publications, including The Missing Entrepreneurs book series, the good practice compendia on Boosting Social Enterprise Development, and Inclusive Business Creation, policy briefs and country-specific policy reviews.

The Better Entrepreneurship Policy Tool is an online tool designed for policy-makers and other interested parties at the local, regional and national levels who wish to explore how public policy can:

  • Support youth, women, migrants and the unemployed in business creation and self-employment
  • Support the development of social enterprises

The Better Entrepreneurship Policy Tool

  • Stimulates thought-provoking reflection on inclusive and social entrepreneurship policies and programmes
  • Promotes learning through international good practices
  • Enhances inclusive and social entrepreneurship policy design and implementation
  • Targets a wide variety of stakeholders, such as policymakers, business associations and networks, chambers of commerce, finance providers, research institutions, education and training providers, and civil society organisations
  • Operates in 24 languages.

Assess your social entrepreneurship ecosystem

Social entrepreneurship focuses on social enterprises, which aim to have a specific social impact through their economic activities. These enterprises can support local development and social cohesion, and they might need specific support measures and other enabling conditions.

This part of the tool allows you to assess whether current policies and programmes enable and support social enterprises to start-up and scale-up. The assessment includes seven modules with thought-provoking question statements, covering different action areas within the social entrepreneurship ecosystem. You will be asked to assess your context against these.

Before you start, here are some points to keep in mind:

  • You can carry out the assessment in your own language by selecting it from the drop-down menu at the top right.
  • Each module takes approximately ten 10 minutes to complete, depending on the information you have at hand. The full assessment, therefore, takes approximately one hour to complete.
  • You can complete the assessment in whichever order you like, and in various stages.
  • You do not need to sign up to carry out the assessment, but to save your results at the end you will need to create an account. An account will also allow you to create groups and invite other stakeholders to take the assessment together.
  • There are NO wrong answers. Please answer your questions as honestly as possible. This will ensure that you get a true reflection.

We hope that you will find the self-assessment useful to stimulate reflection.

Please enjoy the journey! Click here for the assessment: https://betterentrepreneurship.eu/en/node/add/social-quiz

The Good Business Roadmap
|

The Good Business Roadmap

Sara Sophie Osterholzer has developed The Good Business Roadmap, which is a step-by-step guide to supporting first-time social entrepreneurs in getting their business up and running quickly and helping to provide the right foundation for long-term sustainability.

The Good Business Roadmap consists of 10 steps with recommended actions to take under each step. It can be a very helpful guide to be sure to get around all the important issues, when you are going to start a social enterprise for the first time.

The 10 steps are:

1. It all starts with an idea
When you have an idea – it is important to be sure of your purpose and your WHY. Why are you doing it?

2. Set your sights on a destination
Find out where you will go with your business. Create a vision – Where will your business be in 10 year?

3. Map out your journey
Plan your journey, maybe not a 10 year plan but at least make a plan for the first year on the road to reach your vision. Include considerations on the time and the budget you have when you set directions.

4. Do your research
Make sure to know who you customers are and what their needs are. Find out who already tend to their needs.
Make a profile of customers and map your ecosystem (who are offering the same products and services?)

5. Understand the money
Be sure you know the price and cost of your product or services, the costs and how you will fund the launch of your business.
Make a strategy for pricing, create a budget for the first year and set up the tools you need for financial management.

6. Skill up and fill your knowledge gaps
You do not know everything, but you can get help.
Build an advisory board with people with skills that you don´t have, find a coach or a mentor and build a team around you.

7. Make sure you’ve got the right gear
You don´t need to get everything you can get the essentials and invest as yo grow your business.
So basics are Setup a Bank Account, get a domain name and  create a basic website, set up an email account and set up a payment system, create social media accounts and finally legally register your business.

8. Let people know about what you’re up to
It is time to reach out to your existing network reach out to friends and family to let them know your plans and to share your idea and vision on social media.

9. Do a test run
Before you lunch anything it is good to run a test. It is good to know if customers are interested in your product or service. So you might want to make a small prototype test it and get feedback from customers and other important stakeholders.

10. Launch your business
You can launch in many ways, host an event or try to get in the media. But do what you think will give you the best start possible. It is always good to make a launch plan with actions that will give you the most possible success within the first couple of months.

Internship at Social Enterprise Estonia and moving towards a greener lifestyle.

Internship at Social Enterprise Estonia and moving towards a greener lifestyle.

Katerina-Chantzi-Social-Enterprise-Estonia-1536x864I am Katerina Chantzi and I am a social scientist. I am very excited to be an intern at Social Enterprise Estonia during my studies at Tallinn University in Social Entrepreneurship Master’s Programme. I started my internship in June 2020, a time when we were slightly starting to get out of our lockdown “caves” and looking for human interactions. All the colleagues that I was looking forward to meeting and working together in the same place became fascinating squares on my screen on a weekly basis full of creativity, interaction, knowledge and passion to find ways to make this world a better place.

I am very excited and proud of this internship, as my supervisor Helen Mikkov gave me the opportunity to utilise my previous experience and knowledge, encouraging me to discover new paths (by participating in Climate KIC Journey, get in contact with enterprises that are in the network etc.) that would help me to find out what contribution I would like to have in the world and make steps towards that. In the meanwhile, I am running my company, called BinFree, where we offer recycle pick up services in Estonia to facilitate the recycling process for consumers and recycling companies by measuring the environmental impact of both and give practical information to move towards a greener lifestyle and give private consultations to companies and individuals to reduce their environmental impact in their daily life with little effort.

katerina_1

My experience from the education sector, my studies and actions in social policy in different countries,  in combination with my national culture (Greek) that taught me through its ancient literature and drama to live my life by keeping in mind my posthumous fame (“υστεροφημία”) and make decisions throughout my life keeping in mind how I would like to be remembered after I pass out from this life and considering their impact on myself, people around me and the environment around me during my life, made me realise that my mission in this life is to bring people together to act collectively, to help each other in order to increase theirs and other peoples’ happiness by increasing their quality of life. The COVID-19 outbreak is a great example of human responsiveness when in danger regardless of social differences (in front of a virus everyone is vulnerable regardless of social status and wealth), people got together, worked together and acted instantly, responsively and effectively in order to defeat the impending danger. How we respond to the main danger that is threatening us, was created by us and we still feed it, called climate change and how we can defeat it?

By having inefficient state mechanisms to solve social and environmental problems due to shortage of funding, as they considered as unproductive sectors to invest for economic growth due to the fact that they require an interdisciplinary approach, time, expertise, effort to give results and they reveal the vulnerabilities of the dominant social, economic, political system and a dominant neoliberal ideology that influences every sort of today’s policies and politics and has a big negative impact on society and the environment, as it creates short-term financial profits without considering the long term social and environmental impact, there is need to find solutions that protect life and not cold cotton, polymer or paper banknotes.

Social enterprises are a great response to the dominant economic system and its characteristics, as are more flexible in their operations, are social aim driven without losing their business character, are able to combine and bring together key actors from different sectors (either private or public) and try to make a change in the current system without breaking it but reshaping its core. I could characterise social enterprises as hybrid organisations that are born from social justice and economic growth and would lead us to the future of sustainability and long term by transforming the current economic system and push innovation and technology for social and environmental sustainability.

Climate change is a threat that we need to address as soon as possible, as we have very limited time to act and change our current economic system in terms of production, product design, product life cycle, world trade and product distribution, impact measurement in terms of societal and environmental footprint, resource management (materials and labour force), consumption patterns and social values regarding the way we consume. Social enterprises that are already active in the field of environmental sustainability, have a wide variety of opportunities to invade in those sub-systems and create innovative solutions. The decade 2020-2030 will be a transformative decade towards entrepreneurship and climate change and social enterprises need to take the lead on this, to promote social entrepreneurship, help the social groups that are mainly affected from climate change, either by directly employ them or offer them the possibility to develop relevant skills or by enhancing the current production and consumption system by intervening and creating innovative business models.

katerina_3

The main principle that social enterprises that work with environmental sustainability and climate change are that mainly they work with people that are not aware of the problem, are not experts and cannot relate with the problem and devote time to acknowledge the problem. There is no doubt that this creates a lot of obstacles, but at the same time is a great spectrum that can generate innovative solutions for how to educate, engage, motivate people to change their behaviour patterns, start thinking about their consumption habits and decisions, feel part of the problem and at the same time part of the solution by supporting social enterprises’ aims.

In parallel with that, social enterprises need to benefit from their flexibility, adaptability and expertise, and for their unique characteristic that they make a local impact with strengthening and empowering communities. In the post-COVID world (or even still COVID world) that everything takes place virtually, social enterprises need to connect with each other, communicate their aims, visions, missions and results and combine all these small incubators of social action in a big scheme that is accessible to everyone and introduce themselves to the world (besides their direct beneficiaries), create calls for action and show their overall impact. The more visible social enterprises are the bigger their influence and their impact and recognition.

Collaboration and communication need to happen not only among social enterprises but also with the businesses of the current system of production and consumption. Circular and sharing economy offers a range of possibilities and opportunities for social enterprises to discover and explore what can be created from waste, how logistics can have a less environmental impact and how the 5R’s (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot) can be promoted, adapted and integrated as main practices in our daily lives, as mainstream practices. There is a need to strive from the “Take-make-use-waste” model to “take-make-use-reuse/repair/return/recycle” model and social enterprises have the flexibility to experiment in this transition by increasing the employability of certain social groups that contributes to social coherence, by raise awareness on these topics and present data and facts that people that are not familiar with the sector can relate with. For instance, investigate the environmental impact in terms of financial loss within the upcoming years for corporations.

To sum up, social enterprises cannot change the world alone, however, they can be the main actors in this transition and they need to create demand both to consumers and to providers/sellers/main actors in the current market. To achieve this successfully, they need to establish collaborations with stakeholders from the private, public and third sector, have a clear mission, engage people to their goal, explain the importance of what they do in ways that their target audience understands and have a great marketing strategy in place. National and international governments and organizations need to take some more steps forward and put in place besides financial indicators of growth (a great example is GDP), indicators of social growth. Sustainable Development Goals have achieved to have a common terminology around the globe for sustainable development and certain goals, but still, the call for action is at the discretion of the organization. Legal regulations, taxation and investment possibilities can promote initiatives that respond to climate change and environmental sustainability and offer incentives to social enterprises to increase their impact. COVID-19 world taught us that we can respond immediately and effectively for incidents that we consider as important. Let’s learn to act proactively, collaboratively, human-centred and with the responsibility to ourselves, live around us, our ancestors and our future generations.

Social Economy Diaries

Social Economy Diaries

Social entrepreneurs in Europe can now share their story via the Social Economy Diaries, a new initiative of the Social DG GROW Unit F2 under the European Commission.

The European Commission’s Platform Social Economy Community brings together actors in the European social economy field around a range of initiatives and activities. One of the initiatives on the platform is the Social Economy Diaries.
The Social Economy Diaries is a collection of stories about the impact that the social economy has. The idea behind the initiative is to show how a resilient and regenerative form of economy is not only possible, it is in fact already a reality.

By sharing their stories, social entrepreneurs are helping to show, that it makes sense to think beyond profit. At the same time, they show that it is all kinds of people from all over the world who are working to meet some of the great challenges facing the world community.
The stories also help to give decision-makers and advocates of a sustainable economy a greater voice.

If the social entrepreneurs who write the stories give their consent, they will be shared via the Social Economy Community’s social media and a selection of the stories will also be edited and published as “open diaries” in a small online booklet, that can be downloaded, and that will also be distributed to decision-makers, citizens, opinion leaders and other entrepreneurs, as part of the European Commission’s policy activities.

The stories can be told by social entrepreneurs, partners or employees, and if you choose to share your story, you will be asked a series of questions that will help you tell and structure the story. It is e.g. questions like, where does the story take place, what impact has it had, and has it addressed a societal problem?
It takes about 20 minutes to share its story.

Read more and share your story here
